Bad breath with low-carb diets!!

Are you on a low-carb diet and keep wondering why people around you (your family/friends/colleagues) try to keep a healthy distance from you? Well, the reason could be that you have BAD BREATH !!
A low-carb diet works on the concept of ketosis wherein the body uses fat as a source of energy. The by-products of ketosis are ketones and fatty acids, and the excess ketones are excreted in the urine and breath thus causing the bad breath!!
Of course there are different methods to mask it like drinking lots of water, chewing sugarless gum or sucking on sugarless mints and swishing your mouth with water after eating food.Since the cause of the bad breath is metabolic-the only cure would be to get back to eating a balanced diet(with carbs) and getting on a regular exercise routine for your weight loss goals.
It's your choice:
a)Low-carb diets+bad breath=no friends + weight loss + associated dangers(of low-carb diet)
OR
b)Balanced diet +exercise= friends +weight loss + good health

Question: What would YOU choose?

yes ....this ketosis is responsible for many more serious health problems.
even ayurveda says that low carb diets cause bad breath and body odour.....in ayurveda high protien diet is considered 'tamasic' .

No-brainer there!! I could not, would not (in a boat) give up carbs. But yes, balance is definitely the key.

Nice post. I have a lot of friends. That says it all ;)
I never go on fat free diets or low crab stuff. I prefer going balanced.

I work in a weight loss clinic and many of the patients are on a very low carb diet. I've never actually smelled the bad breath, but my college roommate used to do low carb and her pee always smelled awful. Either one is gross. I'd choose exercise and everything in moderation!

Interesting fact.I'm almost always balanced ,can't imagine just eating the curry and not the roti or rice with it.My break fast is some times low in carbs with fruit and eggs. Not sure if that's totally low carb either coz some kind of fruits like bananas have good amount of carbs.

I'd choose my sanity, thank you very much. no carbs in my diet would drive me crazy. and the fact that we get bad breath just proves that our body is not made for low-carb diets!

haha well yes, of all the reasons to eat some healthy carbs, this is one of them!

i believe no 'diet' works, it's all about changing the way you live and eat in a sustainable way that lasts!

Great Info about low-carb diet.

Lavanya,Kalai-thank you.
The Ungourmet-I believe the best way for long term weight loss is to reduce junk in the diet, eat whole foods, fruits and a daily exercise routine.I don't believe in any of the fancy diets.Let me know if you need any further help!
Michelle-you're absolutely right, but most people can't decide that for themselves.Works better when someone plans it out for them:)

great post and I love the discussion and comments at the end, balance is key but most folks do over eat carbs, so 1/2 the plate veggies 1/3 protein and 1/3 carbs works well, lol

Great information. Low carb diets are OK for a short period of time, but at some point you still have to have a piece of bread or pasta!

Moderation is the key!
