Ever tried any of these??

I'm really curious..........about what?? Has anybody out there ever eaten or even seen any of these:
  • Fifth Third Burger-at Fifth Third baseball park (Comstock Park,Michigan)
  • Mega Mel Burger- at Mel's Country Cafe (Texas)
  • 7-pound burrito- at Jack n Grills (Denver)
  • Fried Banana Split- at the Texas State Fair
  • Shack Stack- at Shake Shack (New York)
What's so great about these, and why am I so curious about some burgers/burritos/banana split??
I was just browsing through an article on WebMD,and it lists them as 5 of the most fattening food!! How fattening can they be? Here are the numbers (and yes, please keep in mind that most of us require less than 2,000 calories per day).
  • Fifth Third Burger :4,800 calories
  • Mega Mel Burger :4,556 calories
  • 7-pound burrito : 3,764 calories
  • Fried Banana Split : 2,000 calories
  • Shack Stack : 1,500 calories
4,800 calories in one burger!!!! That's like the amount of calories your body would require in, say, two and a half days! Imagine getting 2 days worth of calories in one meal (that probably is their USP!). Seriously-I need to see these. Are they really large burgers(like the one's Jughead would order at Pop Tate's in the Archie comics I grew up reading)? Can a person really eat it in one go-or do they share it with someone or rather some people? If someone does eat it-do they feel hungry at the next meal or are they stuffed enough to skip the next meal/meals??

Eating out always has it's downside-the cost, the hidden calories. So,what does one do? Stop eating out-well,not really. If you choose wisely you could end up with good healthy foods that are also "pocket friendly". Check out these cool slide show : Healthy Eating at Restaurants.

Question: Do you think it would be a good idea to put the calorie content next to the dish in the menu?

Dear lord! I should be eating about 1500 a day, so that burger would be over 3 days worth of calories! My goodness! And we wonder why there is an obesity epidemic...

I would love to see the calorie content on all menus!

that's insane!

Oh my gosh! 4000 calories from one dish! Guess that forms more than two days food..as you said wish I could see those! How nice it would be to list the calorie content in the menu..but then thinking on the other side business has to go on too :)

I've never heard of either of those!! They all sound delicious, but not as good as some other things I could think of with much fewer calories!!

And, I would venture to say that putting the calories next to the food item would probably not stop a lot of people from eating them! I think it makes sense, in theory, but I don't know how much of a difference it would make. Someone needs to do a pilot study!

I've heard of the Fifth Third burger, but haven't actually seen it. I have family close to that ball park and almost went once, but ended up not going. I want to get a glimpse, now! Just a glimpse. And a bite. One bite.

wooo...... these are really fatty food!
I think it's a good idea to put nutritional values in the menu just to warm people!

Thats crazy... Unfortunately most outside food taste good because of the insane amount of fat in it... Ofcourse the large portion sizes dont help towards the calorie count either...

4800 calories in a burger???? WTH!! This sounds terribly scary to me!

Michelle @ Find Your Balance said...

I don't know if calories on menus are a good or bad thing. On one hand, information is power. But sometimes people are neurotic about calories, or use the power incorrectly (like, I'll eat this cake but skip every other meal and that will be my calories for the day)

Also I'm afraid I know some guys that would actually boast about eating a burger that big, and brag about the calories. It's disgusting, but true! That's our culture.

OH MY GOSH - those numbers surprise even me!! And, you know, some people really do eat those foods every day.

I hope you had a great vacation!!

The article on the 5/3 burger says it's supposed to feed up to 4 people and has 5 1/3 lb burgers, but also lots of other stuff. I think you could feed a lot more than 4 people with that burger, but I wonder how many actually split the burger.

NO NO NO don't be putting nutritional info on menus! I hate that, it screws me over. When I dine out, I want to INDULGE...and those who need to watch their diet can look up online! But not on the menus, please! nonononon!
But 4800 kcal burger? Now that's just crazy.

lisaiscooking said...

I haven't tried any of those, and I don't think I ever will! That's just way too many calories in one item.

theUngourmet said...

Wow! That is a lot of calories in one sitting!

Katherine Roberts Aucoin said...

I haven't heard or tried any of them and whew, I am so glad I didn't! Talk about scarey!

Okay so things are pretty bad when you look at the burger and think - well maybe the shack stack isn't so bad. Ha! It is unbelievable though. I haven't seen the others, but saw an article on the burger a while back. It kind of makes you sick to your stomach.

I could go for calorie content on menus. I think it may help some people think twice before ordering. It is easy to sit down at a restaurant and feel like you should splurge (even though you don't need to b/c you did the night before) and ignore calories. If they were staring me in the face I would consider my options.

However, I do have concern about the obsession of it all. It can go both ways from healthy to being unhealthy. One good thing that may come of it would be that maybe restaurants might try to control the calories a bit in meals if they know it will be transparent.

OMG! but how come? I mean a piece of ground meat burger, some salad and a bun, that would end up with 4000 calories?

p.s. I have recipes with white fungus...post when I am home in a couple of days. White and black fungus are something I eat very often. A bowl of chilled white fungus and wolfberries soup after yoga, or in a hot summer afternoon, or as a morning break dimsum is something I have been always enjoying....

I'm not surprised. I see the evidence of everything I eat almost immediately ... hips don't lie! Guilty confession - I've been to Shake Shack, and although I haven't had the 1500 calorie burger, I've had their regular burger ... and it was YUMMM :((( Shameful.

Lorraine @ Not Quite Nigella said...

Being in another country I can safely say that I haven't tried any of these but 4000+ calories in one meal is a frightening concept (esp as I think I'm only supposed to have 1500 for my height!)

Astra Libris said...

Oh my goodness!! Those dishes sound absolutely terrifying! I mean, I'm all for the occasional indulgence in moderation, but good heavens... :-) I can't even imagine that many calories in one meal... Scary...

I so wish all restaurants would include the nutrition info for each dish on the menu! Of course, one can usually find the healthier items regardless, but it would be lovely to have an exact breakdown...

Thank you so much for your incredibly sweet and encouraging comment about my classes and my return to school! :-)

WOW! People sure have giant size appetites.yep we should be aware of what we are eating, cal.content should be made obligatory :D

eatingRD said...

Isn't that crazy?! I saw that too and about died. How can any one person eat that?? wow! I believe that while the nutrition content shouldn't be right next to the item for those who don't want to see or with eating disorders, I do believe it should be available at the end of the menu or in a separate packet. I know I would think twice if I saw the exact calorie counts on items I am considering.

Nicole, RD said...

Isn't it crazy! I swear I have patients that eat crap like that on a daily basis and think nothing of it...and yet, they wonder why their lipid panel is elevated. Oh, the work of an RD : ) Love the blog!

Ouch, maybe if I was a python or some such and didn't have to eat again for a few weeks? It makes my heart hurt just to think about it...
I wonder if having the calorie count on the menu would make any difference. Do most people eat a gigantic burger because of it's nutritional content?
